Scent Work for Dogs: Follow Their Nose, Track Their Progress

If your dog has ever spent several minutes investigating one patch of grass, you’ve seen how much attention a scent can command.
Scent Work gives that curiosity a purpose. Your dog searches for a particular scent, finds its source and communicates the find to you. You’re working together, but your dog knows something you don’t. Your job is to recognize what they’re telling you.
For those of us accustomed to directing our dogs around a conformation ring, that’s a different kind of teamwork. This time, we follow their lead.
Why is Scent Work good for dogs?
Scent Work gives dogs an outlet for their natural scenting abilities. Searching offers a mental challenge, and successful finds can help build confidence. It’s also a relatively low-impact activity, making it worth exploring for dogs who enjoy a challenge without the physical demands of some other sports.
You get to learn, too. A change in pace, a turn of the head or a sudden interest in one spot can mean something. As you practice, you become better at noticing your dog’s signals.
You don’t have to begin with a title in mind. An introductory class can simply be a chance to try something together and see whether your dog enjoys the search.
Can mixed-breed dogs participate in Scent Work?
Yes. Your dog doesn’t have to be a show dog, or a purebred, to get involved.
AKC Scent Work welcomes purebred and mixed-breed dogs. To compete, dogs must be at least six months old and have an eligible AKC number. Mixed-breed dogs can participate through AKC Canine Partners, subject to the program’s enrollment requirements. Check AKC’s Scent Work eligibility information before entering a trial.
That makes it an activity families can explore with dogs already sharing their homes. Maybe you’re looking for something beyond conformation. Maybe you’ve never entered a dog event at all. There’s room to start with curiosity.
Why we added Scent Work to ShowPoints
We built ShowPoints to make participating with your dogs easier. As the app grows, we want it to reflect the different ways people spend their weekends.
Some families focus on conformation. Others move between shows, Fast CAT and Scent Work, sometimes with different dogs participating in different activities.
Adding Scent Work tracking to ShowPoints 3.0 gives those results a place alongside the rest of your dogs’ accomplishments.
Once you begin competing, the recordkeeping can get complicated. You might have qualifying runs in several elements, be working at different levels and have more than one dog to keep track of. Coming home from a trial should make it easier to answer “What’s next?”
Keep your AKC Scent Work Qs together
A qualifying run, commonly called a Q, represents progress toward a title. Keeping track of where each Q belongs helps you see what you’ve completed and what you’re still working toward.
In ShowPoints, you enter your results and follow progress by element and level. The tracker shows earned titles and how many Qs remain toward the next goal.
It covers Container, Interior, Exterior and Buried searches, along with Handler Discrimination, Elite titles and Detective. Title tracking currently supports AKC Scent Work, rather than NACSW or Virtual Scent Work.
You can see how that works on our AKC Scent Work tracking page.
Getting started with Scent Work
If you’re interested, look for an introductory class through a local training facility or dog club. AKC’s Scent Work overview explains the sport and provides information about getting involved.
Give yourself time to learn alongside your dog. The first goal can be enjoying the activity, understanding the search and recognizing the moment your dog finds what they’re looking for.
If you already compete, you know how much effort goes into each qualifying run. Having those results together gives you a useful record of that effort and a clearer view of the next goal.
More ways to enjoy life with your dog
That’s why Scent Work belongs in ShowPoints. We want to help people discover activities, get organized and keep participating with their dogs.
Whether you’re considering your first class or counting the Qs toward your next title, we’re glad to make room for that journey.
Explore Scent Work tracking and try ShowPoints free for 7 days on iPhone or Android.
ShowPoints tracks user-entered results. Official records, title eligibility and competition requirements remain with AKC and the relevant event organizer.
