Why I Wrote Essays from the Fancy

When I returned to showing dogs as an adult, I expected to spend most of my time learning what happens inside the ring. Presentation, conditioning, timing, and competition all felt like the obvious things to focus on. What surprised me was how much of the sport exists outside of it.

The conversations at ringside. The uncertainty new exhibitors feel but rarely say out loud. The quiet moments after a loss, or the complicated emotions that come with success. Over time, I realized that many of the most meaningful parts of the dog show world were not being talked about directly.

Dog shows have a long history, and much of the knowledge in the sport is passed along informally. You learn by watching, by listening, and by staying long enough to understand the rhythm of things. But that also means some experiences go unexplained. Questions about belonging, responsibility, communication, and culture often remain unspoken.

As an owner-handler who came back to the sport later in life, I found myself thinking about those things more and more. Not just how to win, but how people stay engaged in the sport over time. Why some people feel welcomed and others drift away. What responsibility exhibitors, breeders, judges, and clubs share in shaping the experience for the next generation.

Writing became a way to make sense of those questions.

What began as individual reflections gradually turned into a series of essays about participation in the dog show world. Some focus on preparation and expectations. Others look at disappointment, ambition, mentorship, and the quieter parts of showing that happen when no one is watching. The goal was never to provide easy answers, but to put language around experiences many exhibitors recognize.

Over time, those essays became Essays from the Fancy.

The book is written from the perspective of someone who loves the sport but also believes it benefits from honest reflection. Dog shows mean different things to different people, but most of us share the same reason for being there. We care deeply about our dogs, and about doing right by them.

If you have ever stood ringside wondering how the sport really works, or how to stay engaged in it with intention and perspective, these essays may feel familiar.
